Spring at Goryo Shrine is something special—especially when the Ichihatsu, one of the earliest bloomers in the iris family, starts to flower. I recently visited to catch these beautiful purple blossoms, and the story behind them makes the scene even more meaningful.
Originally, irises grew in the water channels near the shrine. After the waterways dried up and became empty moats, kind-hearted locals replanted Ichihatsu, bringing back this lovely patch of spring color. Now, the flowers bloom proudly each year, thanks to their efforts!
Why You Should Visit:
✔ See Ichihatsu—the earliest-blooming iris—in a peaceful shrine setting
✔ A touching local story of revival and community care
📍Address: 609 Imadegawa Yanagihara-cho, Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, 602-0054, Japan
