Located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, near the upper right side of Kyoto Gyoen National Garden and adjacent to the Kamogawa River, Honmanji Temple is a little-known but quite amazing secret spot for cherry blossom viewing. What you admire are not Somei Yoshino cherry trees, but rather large and elegant weeping cherry trees that stand quietly in front of the stone lanterns of the ancient temple.
There are very few tourists who come here to enjoy the cherry blossoms, most of them are Japanese, so it is not crowded and you can enjoy the flowers leisurely.
The most convenient and fastest way to get to Honmanji Temple from Kyoto Station is to take City Bus No. 7 or 205, which takes about 25 minutes. You can also take the Karasuma Subway Line to Imahatsugawa Station and walk along the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. After enjoying the view, you can also stop by Shimogamo Shrine and the Kamogawa Delta.
