The Togetsukyo Bridge is located in Arashiyama, just a 5-minute walk from Arashiyama Station. The bridge is 155 meters long, and its beauty is especially enhanced during cherry blossom or autumn foliage seasons, offering picturesque views year-round. Along the riverbanks, you'll find eateries and rickshaws, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Nearby attractions include Tenryuji Temple, the Bamboo Grove Path, and the Arashiyama Monkey Park, making it ideal for a day trip.
The Togetsukyo Bridge was originally built during the Heian period (around 836 AD) and was named by the monk Dosho, inspired by the moon's reflection on the Katsura River at night. The current wooden bridge was reconstructed in 1934, preserving its traditional appearance. It spans 155 meters in length and 11 meters in width, accommodating both pedestrians and vehicles.
Arashiyama showcases distinct seasonal beauty: cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant autumn leaves, lush greenery in summer, and serene snowy landscapes in winter. From the bridge, you can overlook the flowing Katsura River and enjoy distant views of Mount Atago, resembling a scene from a ukiyo-e painting.
The best photo spots are at the northern end of the bridge near the café (% Arabica) or the riverside path on the southern bank, capturing the full view of the bridge and surrounding mountains. Additionally, you can rent a rickshaw (approximately ¥9,000 for 30 minutes, for two people), where the guide will share insights into Arashiyama's history and take you to hidden gems. Alternatively, you can opt for a boat ride on the Katsura River, with options for houseboats or small boats (around ¥1,500 per person for 30 minutes), offering a unique perspective of Togetsukyo Bridge from the water.
