Gion Festival

July in Kyoto is the time of the Gion Festival. While the festival technically spans a month, from July 1st to July 31st, many visitors come for the Hoko-tate and Yamahoko Junko (float parades) that take place from the 12th to the 17th and the 20th to the 24th.

The sight of the massive wooden floats, powerfully moved by the hands of the pullers, and accompanied by musicians called hayashi, is a truly magnificent festival worth witnessing.

This is the largest festival in Kyoto, where you can truly experience its culture, so we highly recommend attending.

However, it can be very hot and crowded, so we recommend visiting with ample time and mental space, and taking care of your health.

📍Location: Kyoto, Shijo Karasuma - Kawaramachi
🕰️Hours: 24 hours. However, the floats only move on two days during the festival, and there may be times when they're empty.
