Jōjakko-ji Temple, nestled in the serene setting of Sagano Arashiyama, resembles a reclusive poet-monk, quietly awaiting visitors who are destined to ascend its steps. It may not be the grandest temple in Kyoto, but it possesses an indescribable, understated beauty. The vermilion gate is hidden amidst dense maple trees, and in autumn, the entire temple seems to be gently embraced by the fiery winds, with layers of crimson leaves intertwining like unspoken thoughts.
The temple's name, "Jōjakko," originates from the Lotus Sutra, describing the blissful realm of the Pure Land. True to its name, the atmosphere here is ever tranquil and luminous—not with dazzling brilliance, but with a gentle radiance akin to the serene glow of moonlight. Ascending the pagoda, one can gaze upon the cityscape of Kyoto and the verdant hills of Arashiyama, prompting reflection: perhaps spiritual practice does not require complete detachment from the world; tranquility can also be found amidst the mundane. Jōjakko-ji Temple is like a slowly unfolding Zen-inspired poem in the style of traditional Japanese aesthetics.
