1.5 Days in Kyoto: From Torii Gates to Riverside Nights

I spent 1.5 days in Kyoto on a short trip from Osaka, and even with limited time it felt full of special moments.

Day 1 (half day – afternoon & night):
I began in Higashiyama, strolling through narrow lanes of wooden houses. Before exploring further, I picked up Kakinoha-zushi from Kyoto Station—sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves with a subtle fragrance. In the late afternoon, I headed to Fushimi Inari Taisha, walking under endless red torii gates and pausing at a hillside viewpoint for a wide city view. At night, I had warm sukiyaki in Pontocho Alley and ended with a peaceful walk along the Kamo River, glowing with lantern lights.

Day 2 (morning–afternoon):
I started at the Kyoto Botanical Garden, calm with seasonal flowers and ponds. Later I explored the Garden of Fine Arts, designed by Tadao Ando, where concrete walls, open sky, and flowing water create harmony with art. Here, large reproductions of masterpieces like Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, Da Vinci’s Last Supper, and Monet’s Water Lilies are displayed outdoors in dramatic scale. Before leaving Kyoto, I sat by the Kamo River again, enjoying sweet daifuku while watching locals cycle past.
