📍Nishiki Market (錦市場) Kyoto Visit Review
Located in the heart of Kyoto, Nishiki Market is a traditional market brimming with a variety of foods and ingredients, earning it the nickname "Kyoto's Kitchen." 🐙 The alley-like market stretches for about 400 meters, with over 100 shops crammed into one long alley. Restaurants, side dish shops, and snack shops line both sides of the narrow passageways, offering plenty to explore along the way. The vibrant atmosphere, particularly the mix of locals and tourists, was impressive.
The variety of items on sale included fresh fish, salted seafood, pickled vegetables (tsukemono), skewers, sweets, green tea, and souvenirs. Yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), squid balls, takoyaki (octopus balls), and Kyoto-style omelets (dashi tamago) were particularly popular, as they were easy to eat on the spot. 🍢 Most items were priced between 300 and 600 yen, allowing for a variety of options without being overwhelming. There were also many stalls offering tastings, making for a leisurely stroll.
The market's roof is covered, making it easy to browse even on rainy days, but the narrow passageways can be a bit crowded during peak times. Each shop is well-maintained and sanitary, and the staff speak simple English, making it a comfortable stop for foreign visitors. Overall, this is a place where you can experience Kyoto's everyday life, where tradition and modernity coexist, and is a must-visit for foodies. 🥢
