Tofukuji Temple: A Renowned Kyoto Sanctuary

Tofukuji Temple, the head temple of the Tofukuji school of the Rinzai sect, is celebrated for its magnificent temple structures and stunning autumn foliage. Its name is derived from two great temples in Nara—Todaiji and Kofukuji—and it once stood as the largest temple in Kyoto. The temple complex boasts a National Treasure, the Sanmon Gate, as well as the Tsutenkyo Bridge, renowned for its "Touten Koyo" (crimson leaves reaching toward the sky) scenery. Particularly in late autumn, the fiery maple leaves attract countless visitors. The temple gardens, including the Hojo Garden, are also masterpieces by the renowned Showa-era garden designer Mirei Shigemori.
