Tofuku-ji, a National Treasure Ancient Temple of Japan

Kyoto's Tofuku-ji was founded by Kujo Michiie, with its name derived from one character each from Nara's Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji. It covers a vast area and is one of the Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto. As the head temple of the Tofuku-ji branch of the Rinzai sect, its history dates back to the Heian period. After being rebuilt following a fire, the existing Sanmon gate and other buildings are designated National Treasures of Japan. Known for its 2,000 maple trees, national treasure-level architecture, and the Hojo garden, it is a representative of Kyoto's five major temples and a famous spot for autumn foliage viewing.
