Specializing in tofu dishes – Yudofu Takemura (Arashiyama)

If we talk about the most famous and traditional food in Kyoto, many people would probably choose Matcha or Kaiseki cuisine, but there is actually a third option: Yudofu!

Kyoto has very good groundwater, so it is very suitable for making dishes, brewing tea or making wine. Tofu used in cooking also has very high requirements for water quality. Therefore, in Kyoto, which has good water resources, tofu is also a local specialty with a particularly rich and delicate taste.

Founded in 1962, "Yudofu Takemura" in Arashiyama is a restaurant that specializes in tofu dishes. The only difference is that the more expensive the price, the more dishes there are. Some people may wonder how delicious tofu can be, but once you have tried it, you will know how different good tofu is. You will also be surprised why tofu with just a little soy sauce and chopped green onions can be so sweet and delicious. Tofu can be found in almost all dishes in the set menu. In addition to the "soup tofu" (which can be said to be tofu boiled in kelp water) where the sweetness of tofu can be best tasted, the dish (eight inches) of tofu stuffed in pomelo and then steamed is also very surprising. The fragrance of pomelo and the sweetness of tofu go well together. Hirosu (tofu, mixed vegetables and ginkgo nuts) is also delicious. Arashiyama is an area famous for its many yudofu restaurants. This 70-year-old restaurant is still in business today, so you can imagine how excellent its cuisine is. So I highly recommend everyone to come here and try these seemingly simple but so charming dishes!

Note: It turns out that the tofu used in this restaurant is from another famous store in Arashiyama, "Moriga". Many people come from thousands of miles away to buy it. We also went there that day, but due to the epidemic, "Moriga" temporarily no longer provides ready-to-eat meals. We can only buy it home and make it ourselves, which is not feasible for us, but we ended up trying it at "Yudofu Takemura". We are really lucky!
