Nestled at the foot of the Alps, Interlaken is flanked by two alpine lakes. These interconnected lakes are Lake Brienz (Brinzersee), situated at a higher elevation, and Lake Thun (Thunersee).
Lake Thun derives its name from the town of Thun located on its northern shore. Its waters originate from streams, including Lake Brienz, which is 6 meters higher to the southeast. The lake boasts crystal-clear blue waters, and its shores are adorned with castles, churches, and vineyards. During summer, visitors can take a ride on vintage steamships to enjoy the stunning lake and mountain views.
With a Swiss Travel Pass, you can ride the Lake Thun boats for free. There are two routes available, with the most popular one starting from Interlaken, passing through several lakeside towns, and ending in Thun. Along the way, you can marvel at the lakeside scenery and the Alps. If you have more time, opt for a full lake tour, which takes approximately 2-3 hours.
