The Leshan Giant Buddha is a giant Buddha statue on Mount Emei in Sichuan and one of the largest stone Buddha statues in the world. It is 71 meters high and 24 meters wide. It was built in the Tang Dynasty and took 99 years to complete. The Leshan Giant Buddha was carved out of a bluestone wall. The entire Buddha statue, including the head, body, and seat, has a total of 1,021 gilded copper tiles, each weighing 1 kilogram, with a total weight of 121.6 tons.

The Leshan Giant Buddha was originally named Lingyun Giant Buddha. It was built by Zen Master Hai Tong for the purpose of calming water. This is a Maitreya Buddha, not Sakyamuni. The reason is that Maitreya Buddha has been very popular and sought after since the Tang Dynasty when Empress Wu Zetian was in power. .
