Nestled at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu, and Qingyi rivers in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, the Leshan Giant Buddha is a breathtaking testament to ancient Chinese craftsmanship and spiritual devotion. Standing at 71 meters (233 feet) tall, this seated statue of Maitreya Buddha is the largest stone Buddha in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Construction began in 713 AD during the Tang Dynasty and took over 90 years to complete. The project was initiated by a monk named Hai Tong, who hoped the Buddha’s presence would calm the turbulent waters that threatened passing boats. Remarkably, the statue was carved directly into the cliff face of Lingyun Mountain, with an intricate drainage system that has helped preserve it for over a millennium .
Visitors can admire the Buddha from two perspectives: by walking down the steep cliffside steps or by taking a boat cruise along the river for a panoramic view.
