Small yet stunning islands: Kinmen and Little Kinmen

I didn’t do much research before heading out, but wandering around freely brought countless surprises!
First of all, the layout of the streets and alleys is quite unique. Besides the relatively wide main roads, the narrow alleys are essentially spaces squeezed between houses. Most of the houses are in the Minnan architectural style, somewhat resembling the three- or four-sided courtyards in southern Taiwan. Walking through them feels like stepping into a movie scene, encouraging you to slow down and quietly savor the local atmosphere.
A must-visit spot is Gugang Tower. Situated halfway up a hill by a lakeside, this building offers a serene view in the afternoon. Swans glide leisurely across the lake, the shimmering water reflects the red structure, and the tranquil surroundings make it feel as if time has stopped—truly breathtaking.
Another place worth visiting is Houlin Shooting Range. For a modest cleaning fee of just 50 NTD, you can try simulated shooting and even dress up in military uniforms for photos. It’s definitely worth spending some time here to experience it.
Lastly, you’ll occasionally spot Wind Lion Gods along the roads. These iconic figures of Kinmen remind travelers to slow down and pay attention to the scenery around them.
