Liyang Baisha Ancient Town has a history of over 500 years and is known as the 'Little Nanjing'. The Liuyang River divides it into east and west sides. The town is surrounded by beautiful mountains and clear waters, with a picturesque landscape. Along the riverbanks are the extending stilted buildings, with stone bases and wooden structures, very similar in design to the stilted buildings in western Hunan. In the river, there are ferries and ancient water wheels, accompanied by reeds and weeping willows, making the whole ancient town feel fresh and peaceful.
Rivers flow through the south, shrouding the homes in mist. Walking on the Baisha Bridge, below is the clear Daxi River flowing through the village. Looking from the bridge, the rippling water reflects the scenery, and the small bridges, flowing water, and old streets create a simple and elegant ink painting. Here, the ancient bridge and the tile-roofed houses complement each other, presenting a picturesque scene of 'gentle reflections over the cascading weirs, with green waters and hills like Little Nanjing' nestled by the mountains and waters.
In the town, there is the Weishan Academy built during the late Qing Dynasty, as well as ancient city wall remnants from the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Qing dynasties. In the eastern part of the town, there is an ancient street paved with cobblestones and lined with houses featuring black tiles and grey bricks. Here, there are no endless streams of tourists and shops; it is far from the hustle and bustle of the city, offering more tranquility. A one-and-a-half-hour drive from Changsha, it is a great destination for a trip around Liuyang.
