Sade Village, Lombok: A Living Heritage of the Sasak People

Discover the charm of Desa Adat Sade (Sade Traditional Village) in Lombok – a living heritage where traditions have been preserved for over 15 generations across nine hamlets, including Sade Dalam and Sade Luar. The entire community is guided by a Ketua Adat (traditional leader), ensuring customs are passed down through the years.

Home to about 700 villagers and 150 traditional houses, Sade offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of the Sasak people. Its unique architecture, with tall thatched roofs made from ilalang grass, sets the village apart. Visitors can also watch women weave intricate Sasak cloths by hand, using natural dyes made from roots, tree bark, and turmeric – a craft that’s been practiced for generations.

Though the villagers are Muslim, they continue to embrace their ancestral customs. One of the more distinctive traditions is the practice of “kidnapping” brides, a symbolic act rooted in culture rather than force, reflecting their deep ties to heritage. Marriages are often within the community, but unions with “outsiders” are equally welcomed.

If you’re in Lombok, a visit to Sade Traditional Village is a must. It’s more than just a sightseeing stop – it’s an opportunity to connect with the history, lifestyle, and values of the Sasak people.
