China’s Mountain Masterpiece: The Longji Rice Terraces

Construction of the terraces began over 650 years ago during the Yuan Dynasty and continued through the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Carved into the steep mountain slopes at altitudes ranging from 300 to 1,100 meters (980 to 3,600 feet), the terraces resemble giant dragon scales—hence the name "Longji," which means "Dragon’s Backbone."
