From Ganzi to Luhuo: How to turn 100 km of road into a day of unforgettable experiences

The 100 km between Ganzi and Luhuo can be much more than just a transfer — with the right stops, it becomes one of the most beautiful and authentic journeys in western Sichuan. Here's how to make the most of it:

🥐 Breakfast in Ganzi

Start the day with a Tibetan-style breakfast at Kawagangbu Tibetan Restaurant (卡瓦岗布藏餐店). A meat pastry (30 CNY) and a thermos of butter tea (20 CNY) will give you the energy you need to begin the ride.

🌸 Green Valleys & Spring Blossoms

Shortly after leaving Ganzi, you’ll enjoy views of lush valleys. In spring, the landscape fills with wildflowers — perfect for photo stops.

🏔️ Lamgong Pass (~25 km from Ganzi)

At nearly 4,000 m, Lamgong Pass offers breathtaking views. There's a photogenic sign, and just before the pass, a small shop and restaurant to take a break.

☕ Scenic Cafés & Lake Kasha

Near Gutso Shang, van cafés pop up beside the road — a great place to rest and enjoy the view. Don’t miss Lake Kasha, a small alpine lake surrounded by spring flowers and peace.

🌊 Following the Xianshui River

From here, the road follows the Xianshui River, known for its clear waters and importance to local agriculture. It adds beauty and serenity to the ride.

🏘️ Red Houses & Culture

The villages along the way feature unique red-painted Tibetan houses, unlike those seen elsewhere — offering a new glimpse into local life.

🛒 Stop in Dendo

Dendo is a small village with three mini markets, perfect for snacks. Just 2 km off the road, there’s a Nyingma monastery, representing the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism, known for its mysticism and connection to nature.

🌾 Final Stretch

The last kilometers run alongside the river, with green pastures, grazing yaks, and peaceful villages. It’s a perfect drive to enjoy slowly.

🍚 Arrival in Luhuo

Once in Luhuo, we recommend eating at Chengdu Snacks, a small place near the main square, where we enjoyed their house fried rice.
