Scoops of Nostalgia: Indulging in Lai Kei's Vintage Charm

#hiddengems

In addition to exploring the historic ruins of St. Paul and the iconic Grand Lisboa, a top priority on my itinerary was a visit to Lai Kei Ice Cream, a charming parlour exuding a retro vintage charm. The moment I stumbled upon this gem on YouTube, my excitement soared as I anticipated indulging in their homemade ice cream and soaking in the nostalgic ambiance - an Instagram-worthy spot for any OOTD enthusiast!

The whimsical retro drawings adorning the shopfront, featuring delightful depictions of popsicles, ice cream sundaes, banana splits, and sandwiches, were simply irresistible. Delving into Lai Kei's rich history, I discovered that this beloved establishment boasts over 80 years of sweet success, with the current shop on Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida standing proud since the 1960s.

Welcomed by a gentleman, whom I believe to be the third generation of the Lai Kei legacy, I was struck by his fluent English and warm hospitality. He graciously guided us through the menu, recommending their standout flavors for a delightful tasting experience.

Though initially drawn to Lai Kei's signature ice cream sandwich, renowned for its cute retro graphic design and packaging showcasing a whimsical sketch of a girl in pigtails by the founder, my resolve wavered when I caught sight of the enticing mint ice cream. Our post-lunch fullness limited us to just one choice, so we picked the mint flavor.

Now back in Singapore, I find myself reminiscing about our Macao trip, lamenting the missed opportunity to savor that intriguing ice cream sandwich haha.
