The palacio real is located in La plaza de la armeria, and it is here that Madrid’s cathedral, la catedral de Santa Maria la real de la Almudena is also located.
The palace is the largest royal palace in Western Europe, and is also one of the largest in the world. Construction started here in 1735 and was completed in 1755 and from the outside, you can enjoy the beautiful baroque architecture.
The interior of the palace is just as beautiful as the exterior. As the palace houses over 3000 rooms, including the ornate main staircase, it is impossible to see everything on one visit to the palace. In fact, what you see each time you visit the palace can change as some rooms are often on display when others are not.
General entry to the palace costs 12€. But if you’re a citizen or a resident of the European Union, entry is free for the last two hours of the day from Monday-Thursday, though proof of eligibility is required. All in all, it is well worth visiting and should be high on your list in your visit to Madrid.
