Madrid Like a Local: My Favorite Day of Art, Parks & Tapas

If you’re visiting Madrid for the first time or have just one day to explore the best of the city, here’s how to experience the Spanish capital like a true insider. From world-class art to peaceful parks and unforgettable tapas—this was my perfect day in Madrid.

🎨 Start your day early at Museo del Prado, Madrid’s most iconic museum and home to masterpieces by Goya, Velázquez, and El Bosco. The museum opens at 10 a.m., and arriving right at opening time is the best way to enjoy it without crowds. Don’t miss Las Meninas and The Garden of Earthly Delights—they’re breathtaking in person.

Travel tip: Entrance is free from 6 to 8 p.m., but it gets crowded. If you’re short on time, go early and consider booking skip-the-line tickets.

🌳 After the museum, walk just a few minutes to El Parque del Retiro, Madrid’s green heart. Rent a small boat on the lake or relax under the shade of century-old trees. The Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal) inside the park often has free contemporary art exhibitions and is one of the most photogenic spots in the city.

Travel tip: Grab a coffee from a local kiosk and sit near the pond—perfect for people-watching and soaking up Madrid’s rhythm.

🍽️ When it’s time for lunch, head over to Juana la Loca in La Latina. Their tortilla de patatas (Spanish omelette) is legendary—caramelized onions, perfectly cooked inside, and a local favorite. It’s a must-try dish that elevates a humble classic to something truly special. #deliciousfood #foodie

🍷For a stylish and quiet end to the day, I recommend a hidden gem: the Hotel Santo Mauro. Tucked away in the Chamberí district, this former palace-turned-hotel has a beautiful terrace garden where you can sip a cocktail or glass of wine in total serenity. It’s the kind of spot most tourists miss—and that’s exactly what makes it so special.

Travel tip: Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, the bar and terrace are open to visitors and well worth a visit.

Madrid is a city full of energy, but this route gives you a well-balanced taste of its culture, green spaces, and incredible food. Whether you’re into art, want to relax like a local, or taste the best tortilla in town, this day itinerary has it all.
