Phra That Doi Tung: The First Stupa in the Lanna Kingdom

🛕Phra That Doi Tung houses the left collarbone relic of the Buddha, which was brought from India by King Achutarat. Later, Kruba Srivichai renovated the stupa, and the current stupa was built over the old one.

🛕It is said that in the past, a long centipede flag (Tung) was planted on the mountain peak. Wherever the flag's end landed, a stupa would be established. This is the origin of the name Phra That Doi Tung.

🛕Phra That Doi Tung is the most famous stupa in Chiang Rai province. It is ancient, beautiful, and located on a mountain peak about 2,000 meters above sea level, offering a panoramic view of nature. During the winter, the area around the stupa is especially beautiful, covered in white mist.

🛕Phra That Doi Tung consists of two golden stupas in a castle-like design, with small round bell-shaped tops on square bases covered with terracotta tiles.

🐘It is also the stupa for those born in the Year of the Pig according to Lanna beliefs, where the pig is symbolized by an elephant (Kunchorn) instead of the common pig.

⛰During the Phra That Doi Tung worship festival, Buddhists from Thailand and neighboring countries, including Chiang Tung in Shan State, Myanmar, and Luang Prabang and Vientiane in Laos, come to worship annually.
