Discovering Art & Culture in Marugame – Museums, Craft & Udon

#cityplaybook

Marugame might not be the first place that comes to mind for an art trip, but this charming city in Kagawa Prefecture is full of creative surprises—and a bowl of udon that will make your day.

I started at the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, right next to the station. The space is modern, open, and filled with color—just like Inokuma’s vibrant works. Even if you’re not an art expert, the exhibits are fun and welcoming.

A short walk away, I visited the Marugame Uchiwa Museum, where you can learn about the history of traditional hand fans and even try making one yourself. It’s small, local, and full of charm.

Of course, no trip to Marugame is complete without udon. I grabbed a bowl at Ishikawa Udon, near the station—simple, flavorful, and oh-so-comforting.

Why I recommend Marugame:
・It’s a unique mix of contemporary art, local tradition, and great food
・Everything is walkable from the station, making it perfect for a relaxed day trip
