[Kagawa Prefecture] When you think of Kagawa, you think of "Sanuki udon"! A night tour of udon restaurants in Marugame

I felt a sense of duty to visit Kagawa and try Sanuki udon! However, I discovered that many Sanuki udon restaurants open early in the morning and close in the afternoon...🥲

I searched for places that serve udon at night and found a few, so I greedily went to three of them.☺️ Thanks to that, I was stuffed that day.😇

First, I checked into the hotel! To my surprise, I was greeted with Sanuki udon in the lobby. I'd thoroughly researched the restaurants, and they were already there! Udon Prefecture is truly what you'd expect...lol

It was a classic udon noodle dish topped with wakame seaweed, kamaboko (fish cake), and fried tofu. Maybe dried sardines? The golden broth, different from the Kansai region, had a slight fishy aroma and was easy to drink.☺️

Now, I headed out to explore some more udon restaurants. It seemed like the udon restaurants open at night were mostly izakayas (Japanese pubs) that also serve hand-made udon, rather than specialty udon restaurants. Some people didn't even try the udon ✍️

The first stop was "Iidaya." Apparently, they've been serving udon for over 40 years, and apparently they expanded their side menu to accommodate customer requests, eventually becoming an izakaya-style restaurant.

I had "Yudame Udon" here. It's similar to what we call kamaage here, with the udon noodles submerged in hot water. I really enjoyed the chewy texture and flavor of the udon itself. ☺️

Next was "Udon-ya 108." I had "Niku Udon" here. The unique feature is that the condiments and toppings are served separately, allowing me to enjoy different flavors. 🥳

Finally, we went to "Matatabi Udon Shop." As expected, there was a line, likely due to being in front of the station. While waiting for a few groups, I was able to squeeze in some food and enter the restaurant in perfect condition. 😤

To finish off, I had "Toriten Bukkake." While slurping down the chewy udon noodles, I took a bite of the freshly fried, crispy chicken tempura. It was also delicious dipped in the bukkake sauce! Not only are the broth and ingredients unique, but each udon shop's noodles are also unique because they're handmade, which is interesting.✨️ If you have room in your stomach, be sure to try a few different udon shops!🥰
