I headed to Matsushima from Sendai, but this was the first day of a three-day weekend.

There was a traffic jam near Matsushima, so it was a bit far, but I went to a parking lot near Oshima...

I wasn't originally planning on stopping there, but I was fascinated by the red bridge and took a walk

Oshima was a training ground visited by monks and pilgrims from all over the country.

Stone monuments stand all over the island, and among the caves are Buddhist statues and stone towers.

There are stone monuments bearing haiku by Basho and his disciple Sora.

It is in the opposite direction from the downtown area where the sightseeing boat dock is located,
so it is a hidden gem with few visitors.
