🍣 Fresh Finds and Local Flavor at Matsushima Fish Market

Before heading out to explore Fukuurajima, our family stopped for lunch at Matsushima Fish Market, a local gem we discovered through Google Maps — and it didn’t disappoint.

The market is compact but lively, spread across two levels, with ample parking right outside for convenience. The ground level houses a range of stalls offering fresh seafood delights — think sashimi bowls piled high with tuna and salmon, BBQ tuna skewers, juicy grilled oysters, and other regional specialties. Everything looked incredibly fresh and was made on the spot.

We chose to dine at the outdoor seating area, which gave the experience a relaxed, alfresco-style feel. Despite being casual, the food quality was excellent — fresh, flavorful, and very satisfying. There’s something authentic and special about eating seafood just steps from where it’s prepared.

Upstairs, we found shops selling local produce and souvenirs, making it easy to grab a few edible gifts or regional items to bring home. What stood out most was the presence of many local Japanese diners, which is always a good sign that you’re eating at a place trusted by the community.

Matsushima Fish Market may not be flashy or touristy, but it delivers on what matters most — fresh seafood, local character, and good value in a relaxed setting. A perfect lunch stop before a walk to Fukuurajima.
