A Scenic Getaway to Sendai

My trip to Sendai turned out to be one of the most refreshing escapes I’ve had in Japan. Known as the gateway to Tohoku, Sendai surprised me with its perfect mix of culinary charm and scenic wonders. As soon as I arrived, I knew I had to try the city’s most iconic dish—gyutan, or grilled beef tongue. I stopped by a local favorite near Sendai Station, and the first bite was unforgettable. Slightly chewy, smoky, and full of umami, it was unlike anything I’d ever tasted. Paired with barley rice, oxtail soup, and pickles, the set meal was a full-on flavor journey.
After satisfying my stomach, it was time to feed the soul. I took a quick train to Matsushima, one of Japan’s Three Most Scenic Spots. The view of countless pine-covered islets floating in the bay was nothing short of breathtaking. I hopped on a sightseeing cruise and let the salty breeze and peaceful scenery wash over me. It was the kind of beauty that makes you pause and just take it all in.
The next day, I made my way to Yamadera, a mountainside temple just an hour away. Climbing the 1,000+ stone steps might sound intense, but the path is surrounded by nature, mossy rocks, and calming silence. The view from the top was worth every step—a panoramic stretch of valleys and distant mountains, with temple rooftops peeking through the trees. It felt like I had stepped into a postcard.
Whether it was the satisfying gyutan, the spiritual climb at Yamadera, or the serene waters of Matsushima, Sendai offered experiences I’ll never forget. If you’re looking for a trip that combines flavor, culture, and nature, this hidden gem in Tohoku should be on your list.#travel
