Sky Fortress of Shikoku: My Solo Visit to Matsuyama Castle

#hellohalloween
Towering over the city of Matsuyama on Mount Katsuyama, Matsuyama Castle is one of Japan's most beautiful, original, and atmospheric castles. As one of only twelve castles to have survived the post-feudal era with its main keep intact, it offers an authentic journey into the samurai past. For a solo traveler, the combination of a scenic ascent, a magnificent historical complex, and panoramic views makes it an unmissable destination.

My Solo Itinerary:

· Morning – Ropeway & The Main Keep: I started my day by taking the chairlift or ropeway up Mount Katsuyama, enjoying the rising views over Matsuyama city and the Seto Inland Sea. At the top, I explored the sprawling castle grounds, a designated National Treasure. I entered the multi-storied main keep, admiring the original wooden architecture, samurai armor displays, and the clever defensive design. The view from the top floor was the ultimate reward.
· Afternoon – Hidden Gates & Castle Wells: I spent time exploring the secondary towers, turrets, and the complex network of gates and stone walls that make this a classic hirayama-jiro (hilltop on a plain) castle. I sought out the famous "Well of the 10 Mat Weavers" (Jūgoya no Ido) and simply enjoyed wandering the quiet, wooded paths within the inner baileys.
· Evening – Dōgo Onsen & Reflection: After descending, I treated myself to a visit to the legendary Dōgo Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot spring baths, just a short train ride away. Soaking in the historic waters was the perfect way to reflect on a day spent walking through centuries of history.

Why Matsuyama Castle is Perfect for Solo Travelers:

· Authentic & Majestic: Experiencing an original castle, not a reconstruction, is a powerful and unique privilege.
· A Physical & Visual Adventure: The journey up the mountain and the exploration of the vast grounds feels like a true quest.
· Easy to Navigate: The chairlift/ropeway makes the ascent effortless, and the castle grounds are well-signposted.
· A Perfect Cultural Day: The castle and Dōgo Onsen combo is one of the most iconic and satisfying experiences in all of Japan.

Tips for Your Visit:

· 🚡 Take the chairlift up for a more scenic and fun experience, and the ropeway down.
· 🎟️ Buy the combined ticket for the ropeway/chairlift and castle entry.
· 🕘 Go early to avoid the midday crowds and have the castle paths more to yourself.
· 💧 Bring water, especially in summer, as there is a fair amount of walking and climbing stairs within the castle complex.

Matsuyama Castle is a sovereign among Japanese castles—proud, original, and commanding a breathtaking domain. It’s a solo adventure that feels both epic and deeply personal.
