🛶 “Journeys & Belonging” at the Immigration Museum — Melbourne ✨

#hellohalloween

Located at 400 Flinders Street in Melbourne’s historic Old Customs House, the Immigration Museum explores the rich tapestry of migration, identity and multicultural life in Victoria. The museum opened in 1998 inside a building originally constructed between 1855–1876 for the Customs House, making the site as historically significant as the stories within.

Inside, the museum presents a moving blend of personal narratives, immersive exhibits and artefacts that chart migration from the 1830s to the present. Visitors walk through galleries such as Leaving Home, Journeys, Getting In and Settling, and engage with the objects of immigration—passports, trunks, letters, and multimedia displays of arriving ship voyages. The architecture and the grand “Long Room” of the former Customs House add a dramatic backdrop to these experiences.

Visiting the Immigration Museum invites reflection on what it means to belong, to leave, and to build anew. Open daily from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (closed only on Good Friday and Christmas Day) at the full adult ticket price of around A$15. A typical visit lasts about 1 to 2 hours, and it’s a superb match for a stroll along the nearby Yarra River or a stop in Melbourne’s vibrant cultural district.
