It is the second most populous city in the Philippines after Quezon City, the former capital of the Philippines.

Manila and its surrounding areas were unified as Metro Manila to facilitate the management of this super-growth area. Today, the city and its metropolis thrive as cultural and economic centers. But the city also suffers from problems of overpopulation, traffic congestion, and pollution.
