Biwa Falls, a hidden gem in Tokushima Prefecture

Hidden in the depths of Iya Valley in Tokushima Prefecture, Biwa Falls cascades down a 50-meter-high rock wall like a silver ribbon. The roaring sound of the water carries a rhythmic melody, as if someone is plucking invisible biwa strings in the secluded valley. Legend has it that the fallen Heike warriors once rested here during their escape, and their spirits transformed into mist, still murmuring at the bottom of the waterfall pool. Standing on the observation deck, the refreshing coolness mixed with the damp scent of moss and rocks instantly washes away the summer heat.
Unlike the thrilling Iya Vine Bridge, there’s no need to tread cautiously here, yet you can experience a different sense of "hidden paradise." Descend the steep stairs to the base of the waterfall, where sunlight refracts through the water curtain to create rainbows. The tree roots on the rock wall twist like dragon claws, seemingly ready to awaken at any moment. The highlight is the summer-exclusive activity: enjoy a cup of matcha paired with mochi and red bean soup at the tea house "Biwa Falls Tea House" beside the waterfall. Listening to the water while gazing at the lush greenery before the autumn leaves turn red, you might find yourself unable to distinguish between the mist and the tea steam. 💦
Practical Information
・Transportation: Take the Shikoku Kotsu Bus from Oboke Station to "Biwa Falls" stop (about 30 minutes), then walk 5 minutes to the waterfall entrance.
・Admission: Free (Tea house items start at around 500 yen).
・Best Season: June-July for abundant water flow, late October for fiery autumn foliage.
・Hidden Gem: A mini Jizo statue is tucked in the rock crevice behind the waterfall. It’s said that touching its head can bless your journey with safety.
🌟 The stairs can be slippery, so wear non-slip shoes! If you have time, plan a half-day trip combining the vine bridge and Biwa Falls to experience the "dual hidden paradises of water and vines."~
