[Kanekoya Kichijoji] Crispy Tempura and Sweet & Savory Sauce with Great Value Tendon

Kichijoji is a neighborhood in Tokyo known for its unique shops and delicious restaurants, frequently visited by locals. Among the eateries, I tried Kanekoya Tendon, a sister store of Kaneko Hannosuke!

There are various menu options depending on the type of tempura, with prices ranging from about 1,000 yen to 1,650 yen, offering good value.

🍤 (Matsu) Anago - 1,500 yen
2 shrimp, squid, egg, seaweed, shishito pepper, eel

🍤 (Take) White Fish - 1,100 yen
2 shrimp, squid, egg, seaweed, shishito pepper, white fish

🍤 (Ume) Maitake - 1,000 yen
2 shrimp, squid, egg, seaweed, shishito pepper, mushroom

🍤 Crispiness of the Tempura
There were two large shrimp tempura pieces on top, along with seaweed, shishito pepper, and squid tempura, all generously served. The special sauce was moistly drizzled over the tempura, giving it a glossy and very appetizing look.
When biting into the tempura, it was crispy yet light with little oiliness, maintaining its crispiness until the last bite. Especially the shrimp tempura was fresh and chewy, moist and paired well with the sauce.

🍚 Harmony of Rice and Sauce
One of the most important elements of tendon is the sauce, and Kanekoya’s special sauce had a perfect balance of sweetness and umami. It wasn’t too salty and soaked well into the rice, making every last bite delicious. The rice portion was generous, so I ate heartily without worrying about leftovers.
