Nagaoka Fireworks Festival

The Nagaoka Fireworks Festival, held in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, is one of Japan's top three fireworks displays. Taking place annually on August 2nd and 3rd, it is considered one of the country's premier fireworks events.

The highlights of the festival include the Phoenix Fireworks, which spread across the night sky with the Chosei Bridge as a backdrop, and the massive Sanjakudama fireworks, with a diameter reaching approximately 650 meters. Launched from both banks of the Shinano River, the fireworks fill the entire field of view, immersing spectators in a breathtaking experience.

This festival originated as a memorial and prayer for recovery following the Nagaoka air raid in 1945, which claimed many lives. Its unique features include a moment of silence before the fireworks and messages of peace, making it more than just an entertainment event.

Paid viewing areas are recommended for the best experience, and advance reservations are essential. While the Shinkansen is a convenient transportation option, early arrangements for accommodation and travel are necessary due to the influx of visitors from across the country. Combining history, intensity, and emotion, this is one of Japan's most iconic fireworks festivals.
