When it comes to hydrangeas, the first place that comes to mind is Nara's Yōkō-ji Temple. Known for its hydrangea handwashing basin, iconic hydrangea staircase, and flower umbrellas, the temple offers picturesque spots for visitors to take photos. However, it's worth noting that the hydrangea staircase is essentially a display of potted hydrangeas arranged along the steps, rather than a vast sea of flowers as one might imagine. It is said that the floral handwashing basin at Yanagidani Kannon is the origin of floral handwashing basins at temples and shrines across Japan.
Transportation: From Kyoto Station, take the Kyoto Line train heading towards Osaka and get off at Nagaokakyo Station. After exiting from the west gate, board the special bus that operates only on the 17th of each month, which is the Kannon Enmusubi Day, to reach Yōkō-ji Temple. If you're not driving, getting there can be somewhat inconvenient.
