Picture books originated in the UK, and the Minami-Yamate district in Nagasaki was the only place in Japan that had exchanges with Western Europe in the 19th century. The Prayer Hill Picture Book Museum is built on this small hill full of history. Its unique Western-style fairy tale architecture makes people stop and take a look.
⭐️The first floor of the Prayer Hill Picture Book Museum is a store, which is free to visit; the second and third floors are exhibition halls, and the admission fee is 300 yen.
⭐️1F Kodomon's Store・Fairy Tale Museum
The Fairy Tale Museum store sells up to 10,000 picture books, and also has various fine products related to picture book characters. No matter how unpopular the picture book is, it is possible to find it! The Peter Rabbit boutique that is popular all over the world can also be bought here. I really feel like a frog in the well here. The more famous picture books I usually see are just the tip of the iceberg. It turns out that there are still many exquisite picture book works waiting for everyone to discover!
Admission tickets to the exhibition area can be purchased at the cashier.
⭐️2F, 3F Picture Book Original Painting Exhibition
The second and third floors of the Prayer Hill Picture Book Museum have permanent exhibitions and planned exhibitions of original paintings from home and abroad. When I visited, it happened to be Hasegawa Shuhei's solo exhibition. The exhibition was themed on summer and the scenes were all in cities in Nagasaki Prefecture.
The third floor has a picture book corner. Although this corner is small, it has a collection of 500 books. There are few people visiting the museum, and the quiet atmosphere makes people very relaxed. I believe that people who like picture books can spend the whole afternoon here.
I just mentioned that Minami Yamate District is a place that is very influenced by Western culture - looking out from the stairs, it is indeed the case. After visiting Glover Garden and Oura Catholic Church, it is recommended to visit the Prayer Hill Picture Book Museum, look at picture books, take a break, and enjoy this comfortable Western-style environment.
