Completed in 1863 (Bunkyu 3), this single-story colonial-style (bungu-style) building is Japan's oldest surviving wooden Western-style structure. Scottish merchant Thomas Black Glover lived here for two generations.
It sits on a hill overlooking Nagasaki Harbor. Viewed from above, it resembles a four-leaf clover. Originally built as a salon, it later became a residence, housing reception rooms, bedrooms, and an office. Glover's walking stick and fishing tackle are on display.
The highlight of the interior is the European-style greenhouse, filled with colorful orchids, including the Southeast Asian orchid "Cymbidium," which Glover first brought to Japan. Stables, a tea roasting area, and natural storage facilities behind the kitchen all evoke a sense of daily life. The best view from the exterior is from the garden overlooking Nagasaki Harbor.
