[Okinawa Prefecture] Visit Shuri Castle under restoration

Shuri Castle, a World Heritage Site and symbol of Okinawa.
Destroyed in a fire in October 2019, it is currently undergoing restoration work.
Completion is expected around autumn 2026.

The photo was taken during a visit in the winter of 2024, when I was still able to tour the construction site.
Seeing the restoration work up close was fascinating.
Touring the construction site brought back memories of the first time I visited Shuri Castle.

The temporary roof covering the main hall has apparently been removed, revealing its vibrant red exterior.
This is the first time the main hall's exterior has been open to the public in approximately six years.

Work on the exterior has already been completed, and work is currently underway inside. Restoration work is nearing completion, with completion scheduled for autumn next year.

Shuri Castle has been restored after overcoming five destructions.
We're just a few days away from seeing its beautiful form. I'm looking forward to next autumn.
