Since being inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2008, Fujian Tulou have attracted numerous international visitors. The Hekeng Tulou complex in Nanjing, Zhangzhou, is unique for its low tourist numbers and its rich, traditional atmosphere. It was also used as a filming location for the third season of "Where Are We Going, Dad?" in 2015.
During the Lunar New Year, my family and I visited the Hekeng Tulou complex, focusing on three buildings: the round Yuxing and Chungui buildings, and the square Yangzhao. The village's pristine atmosphere was striking—chickens and ducks roamed leisurely, and villagers went about their daily lives within the buildings. The sense of simple life was truly impressive.
During the Spring Festival, the Tulou were filled with festive cheer. The door lintels were covered in red spring couplets with gold calligraphy, lanterns hung high from the eaves, and the ground was littered with bright red paper scraps from firecrackers. During our visit, we occasionally encountered villagers lighting firecrackers, the crackling sound echoing through the rammed earth walls. The vibrant festive atmosphere was truly captivating for us, even though we grew up in the city.
