Hehuanshan in Taiwan is stunning all year round, with May being popular for alpine rhododendron viewing and winter for snow scenery. However, autumn offers the most breathtaking sea of clouds, while summer showcases vibrant wildflowers and lush greenery.
To experience the sunset and sea of clouds, visit Hehuanshan on a crisp November afternoon. As evening approaches, the clouds rise and roll like a vast river flowing between the mountains. The peaks appear like islands floating on the sea, and as the sun sets, the entire sea of clouds and mountain tops glow red. This grand and magnificent beauty is something you must witness in person. At that moment, you might recall these poetic lines: "Walking to the end of the water, sitting to watch the clouds rise." and "The sunset is infinitely beautiful, but it’s near dusk."
Summer is the perfect season to hike Hehuanshan and escape the heat. Along the trails, you’ll find cheerful blooms like alpine lilies, mountain roses, gentians, and marguerites adorning the bamboo forests and pathways. The comfortable climate will leave you feeling refreshed and uplifted!
While buses are available to reach Hehuanshan, they may not align with the best times to catch the scenery. Driving yourself is the most convenient option.
After enjoying the sea of clouds, stay into the night to marvel at the dark starry sky and the Milky Way. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a shooting star and make a wish!
Important Note: Nighttime temperatures can be very cold, so don’t forget to bring warm clothing.
Accommodation Options: You can stay at Hehuanshan Lodge or Songxue Lodge, or descend to Qingjing for a variety of guesthouses. Alternatively, head towards Hualien and stay at the Guoyuan Guan Yun Lodge.
