Buddha hall at Todaiji Temple in Nara City

Officially called Todaiji Kondo, but widely known as the "Daibutsuden" (Great Buddha Hall)

It was burned down twice in wars in 1181 (Jisho 4) and 1567 (Eiroku 10), and the current building was rebuilt in 1709 (Hoei 6)

It is designated as a national treasure of Japan and is one of the largest wooden structures in the world

It is also registered as a World Heritage Site

The principal image enshrined in the Great Buddha Hall is the seated statue of Vairocana Buddha, popularly known as the "Great Buddha of Nara"

It is about 15m high, 12m wide, weighs about 260 tons, and the pedestal is about 130 tons

When it was first built, it was gold-plated all over and is said to have shone brilliantly

It is a great Buddha built by Emperor Shomu in hopes of world peace
