My day in Nara began at Nara Park, where hundreds of free-roaming deer wandered across the paths and lawns. The moment I bought senbei, several rushed toward me. They were playful but bold—some even tried to nibble paper—so keeping tickets safe was essential. As I continued walking, I passed the grand Todaiji Temple, its massive wooden gate towering above the deer-filled grounds.
In the afternoon, I explored Isuien Garden, a compact yet elegant Japanese garden designed with shakkei, borrowing views of Todaiji and the surrounding hills. The highlight was enjoying a bowl of ramen inside the garden, sitting by the pond while light rain fell. The sound of raindrops, mossy stones, and reflections on the water made the meal unforgettable.
Before leaving, I stopped at a shop famous for its lively mochi-making show. The rhythmic pounding and speed were fun to watch, and the fresh mochi was warm, chewy, and delicious. Just be careful—the crowd grows quickly, and you might lose your view if you’re not in front!
