When mentioning Nara, many people think of deer strolling through the park. But another must-see is Todaiji Temple, a magnificent ancient Buddhist temple that has become a symbol of the city.
Entering from Nara Park, you'll encounter the imposing Nandaimon Gate, towering as far as the eye can see. Inside, you'll find a large, fierce, lifelike guardian deity guarding the entrance to the temple. Continuing on, you'll reach the main hall, Daibutsuden, the highlight. Your first impression is, "Wow... it's so huge!" The giant wooden structure is so tall it's almost tiring to look up. Inside, you'll find a colossal bronze Buddha statue, nearly 15 meters tall. Every time you look at it, you're drawn to an indescribable sense of tranquility.
If you're not just lingering in the main hall, we recommend walking up to Nigatsu-dō on the hill. The view from there is stunning, offering a panoramic view of Nara and a much more peaceful atmosphere than the main hall. Those seeking photos without people in sight should definitely find this spot.
Another highlight is the deer that roam the temple's outer gardens. They're considered the "locals" of Nara. Most people enjoy feeding the deer (they sell deer senbei sheets). However, be careful, as some deer may pull the bag or push you.
