When Kyoto’s maple season is crowded with tourists, I quietly boarded the slow train to Nara. This ancient capital of Heijō-kyō, embraced by mountains, carries the warmth of dried persimmons and incense in the November wind. Deer tread along the ginkgo-lined approach, and the entire ancient city flows with the melody of vermilion, gold, and ochre under the autumn sun, like a spilled maki-e lacquer and raden box.

🍁 Three-Day Autumn Color Guide
Transportation: You can stroll and enjoy the maples around Kintetsu Nara Station; a one-day bus pass is recommended.
Season: Mid-November to early December, the red leaves are most brilliant when the morning frost first falls.
Night Viewing: Check for special night viewing events at Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Todai-ji Temple, and others.
🌅 Morning Chapter: 7:00-10:00
· Ukimido Illusion
At dawn, stand on the nine-bend bridge over Egret Pond and watch the reflections in the morning mist gradually turn blush red. Buy a bag of deer crackers and squat by the shore; a fawn will gently touch your palm holding ginkgo leaves with its moist nose.
· Kasuga Taisha Shrine Garden
Walk along the approach lined with three thousand stone lanterns, where maple leaves form a vermilion velvet carpet on the moss. Encounter a priest scattering rice in front of the Chokai-den; as the deer lower their heads to peck, the red leaves hanging on their antlers sway like floral hairpins.
🦌 Daytime Chapter: 10:00-15:00
· Wakakusa Hill Tapestry
Lie on the slope of triple cherry trees and see maples and pines woven into a patchwork robe. A doe tied with a purple cord will lead you to the sailor’s grave from the Edo period; beside the stone monument, cornelian cherries hang like coral fruits.
· Todai-ji Time and Space
Pick up a palm-shaped maple leaf in front of the Great Buddha Hall’s lotus pond. Through the sunlight, you can see the leaf veins and the wooden beam structure are strikingly similar. The tea house grandmother says, “The maples here were grown from tea seeds brought by Jianzhen.”
🌙 Evening Chapter: 15:00-18:00
· Nara Park Flowing Light
Sit on a bench in Ukumo Garden eating persimmon leaf sushi, watching the sunset gild the five-story pagoda and the deer at the same time. An old man selling candied chestnuts will point out a shrine maiden practicing gagaku music in the ginkgo rain.
· Sarusawa Pond Mirror Realm
When the lanterns are lit, the tragic love story of the maidens turns into colorful reflections on the pond’s surface. A fallen maple leaf just lands on the tip of the five-story pagoda, like a vermilion seal left by the gods.

🎑 Autumn Rituals
· Deer Flute Calling Maples: Borrow a traditional deer flute from the park manager; when played, the red leaves swirl like a tornado.
· Moss Ball Making: Learn to make moss balls wrapped with maple seeds at Isuien Garden; new sprouts will emerge on your windowsill next spring.
· Sutra Copying Offering: At Todai-ji’s Nigatsu-do Hall, copy the “Autumn Leaf Sutra” with silver ink, mixing crushed red leaf pulp into the paper.

“Nara’s autumn taught me: true brilliance is not about competing for beauty, but like the maple leaves of ancient temples—only revealing the fullest veins of life at the moment they fall.”
