📍 Rhine Falls, Switzerland
🗓️ Visited: Mid-Summer, After landing in Zurich ✈️
After arriving in Zurich the night before, we kicked off our Swiss getaway with a mid-morning trip to the stunning Rhine Falls — and it was the perfect way to ease into our journey. Whether you're traveling as a couple (like us), solo, or with little ones in tow, this day trip ticks all the boxes: easy, scenic, and unforgettable.
🚆 Getting There:
Rhine Falls is less than an hour from Zurich by train. We took the train to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall station, which places you right at the entrance of the falls — no long walks, no taxis needed.
🎟️ Entrance Fee:
Just CHF 5 gets you access to several spectacular viewing platforms and a panoramic elevator that takes you close to the crashing water. The roar of the falls and the mist in the air make it feel like you're standing at the edge of the earth. Free for kids under 3.
💸 Traveling on a Budget?
You don’t have to spend much to enjoy Rhine Falls. The free walking paths and bridge crossings offer incredible views, especially if you take the trail across to the other side of the river. From there, you get a full front on view of the falls — amazing for photos!
🚤 Boat Ride Options (Optional but extra fun):
For those who want to get even closer (and maybe catch a rainbow in the mist), the boat tours are a fun add-on:
🔹 Short trip (15 mins) – CHF 7
🔹 Rock tour (30 mins) – CHF 20 (you actually climb onto a rock in the middle of the falls — thrilling and photo-worthy)
🔹 Panoramic ride (30 mins) – CHF 10
👨👩👧👦 For Families: Kids will love the boat rides — especially when the boat gets close enough to feel the spray. There's also a small adventure playground and open space to run around near the visitor area.
🧍 Solo Travelers: The calm pace, safe paths, and photo-friendly angles make this an ideal spot to take your time and soak in the moment. Easy train connections and clear signage make navigating the area solo a breeze.
💑 For Couples (like us): The peaceful setting and dramatic scenery made this one of our favorite mini-excursions. There are quiet corners for sitting, and a lovely little café at Schloss Laufen for a coffee break overlooking the water.
📸 Photo Tips:
Don’t miss the bridge view from across the falls.
The lower platform offers the most dramatic angle — you’re practically inside the mist!
Mornings often bring out rainbows, especially on clear days.
🗓️ When to Go:
We went mid-morning in August and it wasn’t too crowded. Arriving before lunch also means better light for photos and shorter lines for boat rides.
⭐️ Final Thoughts:
Whether you're looking for a peaceful nature moment as a couple, a solo reset from the city, or a fun half-day outing with kids, Rhine Falls delivers big beauty with very little hassle. It’s dramatic, accessible, and 100% worth adding to your Swiss itinerary.
