Follow the sea breeze: My stroll along the easternmost coast at Sandiao Cape

That day, I turned off the coastal highway onto a narrow cape road, eventually parking the car by a grassy field. In the distance, you’ll spot a row of pristine white buildings—those are the lighthouse and nearby bunkers. Standing under the sun, gazing at the endless blue, with waves crashing against the cliffs, it felt as though time had come to a standstill.

🎒 Moments that added personal memories

Trail walking: Strolling along the coastal trail, the wind swept across the grass, carrying a moist, salty aroma. Every step felt like a symphony of mountains and sea, as if I had become part of the natural beauty of Taiwan’s northeast coast.

Approaching the lighthouse: The white tower stood out, radiant yet gentle, flashing every 28 seconds like a girl winking at the sea. The closer you get, the more you can sense its role in safeguarding fishing boats and islands.

Exploring the bunker: The nearby white bunker, with few visitors, offers expansive views. From here, you can clearly see the Magang fishing village and Turtle Island in the distance, making it a perfect spot to sit, enjoy the breeze, and watch the sunset.

🗺️ Tips for the best experience

• Find the right photo angle: Climb up to the lighthouse platform and zoom out to capture the sea, the tower, and the grassy slopes all in one shot.
• Bring a jacket: The sea breeze can be quite chilly, especially when waiting for the sunset atop the hill, so staying warm is essential.
• Plan to stay for about an hour: Walk the trail, take photos, chat, and enjoy a bottle of water—it’s just right.

🚗 Transportation arrangements (my route)

I drove there myself: Take National Highway 1, switch to Taiwan Route 62, then connect to Taiwan Route 2 along the coast. Near Fulong, look for the fork leading toward the small pier. Alternatively, you can take the Taiwan Railways to Ruifang and transfer to Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Route 856, getting off at Magang Station.

As I left, the sky remained impossibly blue, unlike anything I’d seen in Taiwan. Reflecting on every step at Sandiao Cape, it wasn’t just about seeing the lighthouse—it was about hearing the waves, feeling the sea breeze, and understanding the rhythm of this unique cape.
