Yehliu Geopark: Taiwan's Natural Sculpture Gallery

Yehliu Geopark, located in Wanli District of New Taipei City, Taiwan, is a coastal attraction about 1 hour and 30 minutes northeast of downtown Taipei. This area, which borders the Pacific Ocean, is part of the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area and is especially popular as a day-trip destination from Taipei.

This natural geopark was formed through marine erosion. Over time, the sandstone layers have been eroded by seawater and wind, creating uniquely shaped rocks that look as if they were intricately sculpted by an artist. Among the most famous formations are the "Queen's Head Rock," as well as the Candle Rock, Mushroom Rock, and Ginger Rock, each with its own distinctive name. The park holds significant geological importance and was officially designated as a geopark in 2003.

Visiting in person is a completely different experience compared to just seeing photos! The mushroom-shaped rocks scattered across the golden sandstone were truly stunning. Each rock seemed to have its own unique expression, making it a delight to explore them one by one. However, for preservation purposes, access to some rocks is restricted, so be sure to respect the safety boundaries. Since it’s a coastal area, the wind can be quite strong, so take care to secure your belongings like hats or scarves.
