On January 1, 2017, the illuminated Empire State Building stood out brightly against the night sky in New York, and it was very beautiful.

I lined up four hours before the New Year to welcome the New Year in Times Square, but the huge line had already started before dusk, and police officers in cool New York Police uniforms were regulating the line with ropes stretched every block.

Even after two hours, Times Square was still far away.
It was dangerous to be so crowded, so people were lining up at a certain distance, so I wondered if we couldn't go any further?

Four blocks away, I could see Times Square.

I had given up, thinking that this year's countdown might start here... but they still moved each line forward from the end of the rope, so by the time the countdown began, we were two blocks away from Times Square.

And then the countdown finally began.
Amidst tremendous cheers, the new year began... 2018 is still a long way off, but there's no doubt that the new year will come in at Times Square.

Since going to China in 2020... due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, I've only been to Bangkok last fall.

Instead, I've been able to travel domestically to nearby Kyoto many times, but... it's about time I went on a proper overseas trip.
