Located on Cape Udo, which juts out from the Nichinan Coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, this shrine has been worshipped by people from all over southern Kyushu since ancient times and has flourished as a place of asceticism.
It is famous for its lucky ball throwing and Shanshan horses.
The wavy rocks formed by alternating deposits of sandstone and mudstone seen on the south side of Cape Udo are called Udo Senjojiki Kiiwa (Oni no Sentakuita) and are designated as a natural monument of the prefecture.
To worship, you must descend the long stone steps built along the cliff.
It is a rare "kudarimiya" shrine.
The rough waves crashing against the strange rocks and the bright vermilion bridge, which can be seen from here, create a mystical atmosphere.
Udo Shrine has many ups and downs.
There are many steep steps from the parking lot and bus stop, so we recommend visiting on a sunny day wearing comfortable shoes and clothing.
