Ha Long Bay on Land: My Unforgettable Ninh Binh Adventure

Ninh Binh is often called “Ha Long Bay on Land” — and it’s easy to see why. Instead of towering limestone karsts rising from the sea, here they emerge from emerald rice paddies and winding rivers, creating a landscape that feels like a real-life painting. Located about 90 kilometers south of Hanoi, this province is a mix of dramatic scenery, ancient temples, and peaceful countryside life. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site, which says a lot about how special this place is.

My day trip started with a two-hour bus ride from Hanoi, with pick-up at my hotel around 7:45 AM. The journey itself was already a treat, passing by green rice fields, buffalo grazing, and little villages that seemed untouched by time. The itinerary for the day was packed with four highlights: a visit to Hoa Lu Temple or Bai Dinh Pagoda, a buffet lunch at Trang An Bungalow, a scenic sampan ride through Trang An, and finally a hike up Ngoa Long Mountain.

Hoa Lu Temple offers a peek into Vietnam’s history as the country’s ancient capital, while Bai Dinh Pagoda impresses with its sheer size — it’s the largest pagoda complex in Vietnam, with hundreds of Buddha statues and a tranquil, spiritual vibe. Lunch at Trang An Bungalow was a welcome break, with plenty of local dishes and vegetarian-friendly options. Then came the iconic Trang An boat ride, where locals skillfully row with their feet, taking you through winding waterways, hidden caves, and breathtaking limestone cliffs. The grand finale was climbing Ngoa Long Mountain, which rewarded us with panoramic views over the lush valleys and rivers — totally worth the leg workout!

Ninh Binh might be just a day trip away from Hanoi, but it has enough beauty and charm to make you want to stay longer. Whether you’re here for the history, the nature, or just to soak in the peaceful atmosphere, this place delivers it all.
