Echizen Ono Castle, the symbol of Ono City, Fukui Prefecture, is a scenic spot known as the "Castle in the Sky." From autumn to early morning in winter, the town is enveloped in mist, creating a mystical sight of the castle floating above the clouds. It's almost like a Japanese Machu Picchu!
The castle was built by Kanamori Nagachika during the Sengoku period, and the current castle tower was rebuilt in 1968. Because it's built on a mountain, the route up to the castle is a bit steep, but after about a 20-minute hike, you can reach the tower and enjoy a panoramic view of the Ono Basin. The moment the morning mist clears is especially breathtaking.
There are viewpoints from within Ono City where you can see the castle, and the view of Ono Castle over a sea of clouds from the Inuyama Castle Ruins Observatory is breathtaking! If you're lucky, you might even be able to capture a photo of the "floating castle" that's become a hot topic on social media.
